Mail Boxes Etc.: A Global Franchise Success Story Powered by Continuous Growth and Strategic Expansion

Discover how Mail Boxes Etc., now part of Fortidia Group, evolved from a 1980 U.S. startup into a global franchise network with 2,800+ locations in 52 countries, offering powerful business services and franchise opportunities worldwide.
Since its creation in 1980 in San Diego, California, Mail Boxes Etc. has grown into one of the world’s most recognized franchise networks in the business services sector. Today, the brand operates under the Fortidia Group umbrella and continues to expand its international footprint through innovation, acquisitions, and a strong franchise model.
From a local concept to a global franchise network
Originally founded to serve the needs of local businesses and consumers with mailbox and shipping solutions, Mail Boxes Etc. quickly evolved into a scalable business model. In 1993, the brand entered Italy through master licensee Graziano Fiorelli, marking the beginning of its major international expansion.
The Italian network became a key growth engine, eventually exceeding 500 service centers and expanding its influence into Spain, Germany, and Austria. By the early 2000s, the MBE model had already proven its strength across multiple European markets.
A turning point: global ownership and expansion
A major milestone occurred in 2009 when MBE Worldwide acquired the global Mail Boxes Etc. business from a subsidiary of UPS Inc.. This acquisition, which excluded the U.S. and Canada, positioned MBE Worldwide as the sole owner of the brand and franchisor of the global system.
From that moment, the network accelerated its expansion strategy, reaching new markets and strengthening its franchise offer.
Rapid international growth
Between 2010 and 2017, Mail Boxes Etc. experienced significant expansion:
- Over 1,370 service centers worldwide by 2010
- More than 1,600 locations across four continents by 2016
- Over 2,500 service centers by 2017, including a strong presence in the United States through strategic acquisitions such as PostNet International Franchise and AlphaGraphics Inc.
This period marked the transformation of MBE into a truly global multi-service franchise platform combining logistics, printing, marketing, and e-commerce solutions.
Strategic acquisitions and digital transformation
From 2021 onward, the group intensified its diversification strategy by acquiring several key companies, including PACK & SEND, Multicopy, PrestaShop, GEL Proximity, and WORLD OPTIONS. These acquisitions strengthened its capabilities in e-commerce, fulfillment, and proximity services.
At the same time, MBE expanded its direct presence in the United Kingdom and Ireland, reinforcing its European leadership position.
A new identity: Fortidia Group
In 2024, MBE Worldwide officially rebranded as Fortidia Group. This strategic change reflects the Group’s evolution beyond traditional shipping services into a fully integrated ecosystem covering e-commerce, logistics, marketing, printing, and fulfillment solutions.
The new identity consolidates decades of expertise and innovation under a unified global brand vision, positioning the Group for continued international growth.
A franchise opportunity with global reach
With approximately 2,800 service centers in 52 countries, Mail Boxes Etc. continues to offer entrepreneurs a proven franchise model supported by an established international network. Its success is built on a simple but powerful concept: helping local businesses grow through accessible, high-quality business services.
As the Group enters a new phase under the Fortidia brand, the opportunity for new franchise partners has never been stronger.
