The La Vie Claire Odyssey: Pioneer of Organic Food

Dive into the inspiring story of La Vie Claire, a pioneer in organic food, which since 1946 has been promoting a healthy and responsible lifestyle.
In 1946, a free-thinking and enlightened man, Henri-Charles Geffroy, laid the foundations for what would become a true revolution in the food industry: the creation of the magazine “La Vie Claire”. Two years later, in Paris, the first La Vie Claire cooperative was established, paving the way for a new era with the commercialization of untreated products, followed by the launch of the first products under the La Vie Claire brand.
As the years went by, La Vie Claire continued to grow in popularity, and by 1965, the brand had opened 94 stores across France. However, in 1980, the company reached a major turning point when it was acquired by Bernard Tapie, followed by the acquisition by the Distriborg Group of Régis Pelen in 1996, a key player in the organic food industry.
In 2000, convinced of the potential of La Vie Claire, Régis Pelen decided to sell the Distriborg Group while preserving La Vie Claire as an independent family-owned business. A modernization phase soon began: in 2001, Benoit Soury and Brigitte Brunel Marmone, two specialists in the organic sector, joined the team to redesign the product and service offering.
The headquarters of La Vie Claire moved to Chaponost in 2002, close to fruit and vegetable producers in the Rhône-Alpes region, reflecting the company’s desire to reconnect with its agricultural roots. In 2003, the network counted 130 stores, and in 2006, La Vie Claire launched its first magazine, providing customers with organic tips and recipes.
The commitment of La Vie Claire to sustainable development became concrete in 2009 with its participation in the Sustainable Organic Company initiative. In 2010, the company surpassed the milestone of 200 stores, and the following year, it moved into an HQE and BBC-certified logistics site in Montagny, symbolizing its environmental commitment.
Over the years, La Vie Claire continued to expand and diversify its offering. In 2014, it became the first specialized retailer to obtain ISO 9001 certification, while in 2015, it achieved a record with the opening of 40 new stores. In 2016, the company introduced its new eco-responsible store concept, featuring elements such as LED lighting and eco-designed wooden furniture.
In 2017, La Vie Claire reached the milestone of 300 stores and launched a national loyalty program along with a community mobile application. That same year, the brand also celebrated its 70th anniversary, reinforcing its identity with the slogan “Organic since forever and forever organic” and unveiling a new editorial website rich in organic recipes and advice.
The following years were marked by renewed certifications and an even stronger commitment to organic products and sustainable development. In 2021, La Vie Claire reaffirmed its mission: inspiring everyone to consume better for the well-being of people and the planet. In 2022, the company surpassed the milestone of 400 stores, reflecting strong momentum and unwavering dedication to organic values.
Today, La Vie Claire continues to defend the principles of healthy eating while promoting a committed vision of an environmentally responsible lifestyle.
